In addition to regular general adult yoga classes I teach group and private yoga classes for women during pregnancy. These sessions incorporate yoga asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques) and much needed relaxation techniques for women from 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Yoga is a safe, simple and natural method of preparing the body and mind for labour and birth. A regular yoga practice during pregnancy can enhance this transitional phase; empowering the mother to consciously engage in her pregnancy and birthing options whilst strengthening the body and calming the mind. The physical asana practice is specifically suited to pregnancy throughout the second and third trimesters, helping to ease the typical discomforts that are experienced. The vinyasa flow style of my Yoga for Pregnancy sessions synchronise the yoga postures with the breath, whilst pranayama practice explores and encourages an awareness of the breath, on and off the yoga mat.
Research suggests that practising yoga regularly during pregnancy can have many benefits for women and their babies. Yoga in pregnancy can;
- improve sleep
- reduce stress and anxiety
- increase the strength and endurance of muscles needed for childbirth
- promote rest and relaxation
- improve postural changes (kyphosis) associated with pregnancy
- encourage optimal foetal positioning for birth
- help to alleviate discomforts such as nausea, constipation, water retention and varicose veins
My comforting style provides a sense of relaxation and calm. The weekly Yoga for Pregnancy sessions cultivate a practice that is embedded in self-care, empowering women to practice with self-love, compassion and acceptance of the stages and changes of pregnancy and beyond, whilst building the connection between mother and baby.
No previous experience of yoga is necessary to enjoy the benefits of a practice during pregnancy.
